Our History
Our history is rooted in self-hatred.
Back in the late 2000s, our founder, Adam Ris, went to art school to become an illustrator. He carried around an old art supply case with vinyl letters that read “Art Sucks.” He brought it everywhere: to painting class, across campus, and anywhere he needed his supplies.
And the thing is, he meant it. Adam loved making art and thought it has a lot of potential to be functional and useful. However, he also thought most art was pretentious and pointless. He believed many artists spent more time talking about why their work mattered than actually creating something that did. He always felt art should be useful, with a real purpose and real value to others.
Years later, after illustrating for toy companies, working with luxury brands, and running another successful agency, Adam started to notice something familiar in marketing. The same problems. The same fluff. The same habit of pretending something worked when it didn’t.
That realization is where Marketing Sux came from. What started as a joke on a paint-stained case turned into a mission to make marketing that actually matters, that actually works, and that never forgets why it exists in the first place.
